Renault courageously chose to develop a V10 for their first normally aspirated engine in 1989, despite history showing that no V10 engine had ever won a race in Formula 1. Innovation, however, was a Renault hallmark. When they first entered F1 in 1977 they used a 1.5-liter V6 turbo, becoming the first manufacturer ever to race a turbocharged F1 engine. Despite teething troubles, it was winning by 1979, and by 1986 everyone had copied their idea. History ultimately repeated itself and by 1998 every F1 team was using a V10.
