A contentious 1987 season saw him lose the title to teammate Nelson Piquet and ended in a practice crash at Suzuka that left him with back injuries. After spending the 1988 season in the middle of the pack, Mansell moved to the Scuderia for 1989 and was the last driver signed by Enzo Ferrari before his death. Two wins that year should have been the stepping-stone to a title run in 1990, but the signing of Alain Prost destabilized him. Mansell's car would frequently break down while Alain would take crucial points. Right Patrese was the lynchpin of the Williams-Renault program and, at Imola in 1990, took his first win in seven years. Although runner-up in the 1992 championship, 1991 was Patrese's finest year as a driver, regularly outpacing Mansell, and finishing the season with a pair of victories. The advent of traction control and active suspension seemed to remove Patrese's feel for the car in 1992, and his only victory was at Suzuka. |
